Show Notes for Season 1 Episode 42 – December 3, 2022
- Thanksgiving Day Parade – NBC coverage annoys Nicole
- It annoys this person too
- NBC and the major networks force you to watch ads, musical numbers and interviews with celebrities you have never heard of while The floats and balloons pass by in the background. They have commercials every 5 minutes. You miss everything while the hosts chatter about their dinner plans.
- USA Today did a great job
- 1927 to 1933 – They would release a valve on the balloons and the helium would slowly release and people could return them for a $100 reward ($1,700 today). Before that the balloons were just released full and then they would pop when they got too high in the sky.
- 1958 – Helium shortage – parade balloons were carried around on cranes while two vacuums working in reverse pumped air into the balloons. After the parade the vacuums were used to suck the air out.
- Helium is used in MRIs and solar cells and large hadron collider (a bunch of sciencey stuff)
- 1993 – Sonic the Hedgehog crashed into a lamppost due to wind
- 1997
- Cat in the Hat – knocked off part of a lamppost and put a woman in a coma
- Thanksgiving ’97. The day Barney was killed (Barney balloon got caught on a streetlight and ripped. Police swarmed him and stabbed him with knives to deflate him for safety reasons).
- The Pink Panther
- 2005 – M&Ms – hit a lamppost and injured two women
- 2012 – The confetti they used was actually shredded documents from Nassau County Police Department
